About

When I was living in Alajuelita for about a year, Mi Cantón became one of those places I kept going back to. I had an apartment up on a hillside, so I remember the climb well after a heavy rain, and coming down for a good meal here always felt worth it. The brisket was the dish that kept pulling me back — tender, full of flavor, and cooked in a way that made it stand out for me in Costa Rica. I also liked the sangria, especially if you enjoy something fruit-filled and flavorful. The restaurant has a relaxed, welcoming feel, and I appreciated that the same waiter often served me, spoke excellent English, and took the time to explain the menu. On a few visits, the owner even came by to check on things, which added a personal touch. They do wood-fired cooking, and you can actually see the firewood being used. There’s off-street parking too, which helps in that area. If you’re in Alajuelita and want a good, unhurried meal, I’d start with the brisket.

Glen's Recommendation

June 2026

When I’m traveling through Costa Rica, I’m always on the lookout for places that feel truly local but still surprise me with something special — and Restaurante Mi Cantón Alajuelita did exactly that. After my visit, it quickly became one of my favorite local restaurants in the San José area.

What stood out most for me was the brisket. I’ve tried a lot of barbecue and smoked meat across my travels, and I can honestly say this was one of the best briskets I found in Costa Rica. It had that rich, tender texture and deep flavor you hope for, and you can taste the care that goes into the cooking. The authentic wood-fired approach really comes through in the food, and that made the whole meal feel extra memorable.

I also really enjoyed the sangria — refreshing, well-balanced, and a great match for the meal. Just as important, the service was friendly and welcoming from start to finish. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, which makes it an easy place to settle in, enjoy good food, and take your time.

If you’re a traveler who loves discovering hidden spots with real character, this one belongs on your list. It’s the kind of restaurant I’d happily return to, especially if I’m craving great brisket in a laid-back, authentic setting.

Travel With Glen Pro Tip: Go a little hungry and ask what’s coming off the wood fire that day — that’s where you’re most likely to catch the kitchen at its best.

Glen's Story

Finding Great Brisket in Costa Rica

While living in the Alajuelita area for nearly a year, I found myself returning to Mi Cantón again and again. Between the authentic wood-fired cooking, some of the best brisket I've found in Costa Rica, and a welcoming atmosphere that always felt like home, it quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in the region.
